Primary school landscaping – Chipstead, Surrey
Job Specification - Commercial
A primary school headteacher wanted to landscape a new recently built classroom extension. This new classroom was for very young children so a ‘playful’ arrangement in landscaping was the directive.
Solution Provided
Trees that were cut down to make way for the new building were ‘recycled’ successfully into train wheels (as the children remarked). Easy go, non-prickly shrubs were planted throughout and the surrounding area was laid with fresh turf. A modern feel in the new school landscape was also desirable, as this reflected well with the new building facilities, so a selection of Bamboo, Phormium and Chamaerops Palms were also planted.
Along the new pathway to the classroom front door, three large steel containers needed to ‘disappear’. As a playful and original idea of camouflage, high-grade artificial grass was attached to the containers’ frontage. As these were functioning steel containers to which access was sometimes required, the moving parts were painted black.
I believe it is a lovely idea to plant a new tree once a new building has been constructed – especially if existing trees have had to be cut down first. With the Headteacher’s agreement I procured a very nice looking Olive Tree - the symbol of which is peace, which was planted up close to the classroom main entrance.
